Cricket and beer proved they do mix as, on Friday night (17th May), Chester-le-Street Cricket Club were presented with the Durham CAMRA “Club of the Year” Award for 2008. The award is given to the County Durham Club, who, in the opinion of the CAMRA members has the best range of real ales combined with the best standards of cellar keeping in the County. Upon receiving the award the award the Club’s General Manager, Avril Currie, said “We are delighted to receive this award because it rewards the efforts put in by all the staff- both to our real ales and our normal popular range. We work hard at keeping our cellar in tip-top competition and have always had a good name for our beers and we will certainly be celebrating with a drop or two of real ale”. Avril went on to say “These are exciting times at The Cricket Club. Apart from this award our Function Room Extension should be ready by August and, on June 14th we are hosting (and selling tickets for) “The Popular Proms” which is going to be a wonderful outdoor “picnic in the park” evening of music with a spectacular firework finale”
Club Chairman Stephen Willis said “This award is a real feather in the cap for the Club and our congratulations go to Avril and her staff for their initiative and hard work. The Club is moving forward rapidly at the moment, both on and off the field, and we look forward to hosting even more members and guests during this year both at The Proms and in our new Function Room”
